Torque problem of wrench
The bolts on the cylinder head of an engine require tightening to a torque
of 83 m.N. If a wrench is 28long, what force perpendicular to the wrench
must the mechanic exert at its end? If the six-sided bolt head is
15in diameter, estimate the force applied near each of the six points by a
socket wrench.
Hello
Part one :
The arm lenght = 28 cm i guess (check the unit)
Force = Torque / arm = 83 N.m / 0.28 = aprox. 296 N force Part two : Again the bolt head unit is not given, i suppose it is in mm >> 15mm Now the 83 N.m torque is going to be resolved into six forced around the hexagonal of the bolt head so that each point will be acted upon by equal force which equalls to : Force in each point = total force on bolt diameter/ 6 where total force on bolt diameter = Torque / radius = 83 Nm / (0.015*0.5) m = 11 066 N = 11 kN Now : Force in each point = 11 066 / 6 = 1844 N = 1.8 kN hope this simple to understand Good Luck
