The bolts on the cylinder head of an engine require tightening to a torque
of 100 m·N. If a wrench is 30 cm long, what force perpendicular to the
wrench must the mechanic exert at its end? If the six-sided
bolt head is 15 mm in diameter, estimate the force applied near each of
the six points by a socket wrench...
The torque (T) is the force (F) on the wrench times the
distance (d) from the force to the center of the bolt. Therefore if the
requirement is 100 Nm then the force would be
F = T/d = 100/0.30 = 333 N (watch your units!)
The force on the each of the six points would be F = 100/0.015/6 = 1111 N
